Greenlight On The Southern Railroad Line
as performed by Tony Rose

(D)Standing on the sidetrack at the (A7)south end of (D)town
On a dry, hot, dusty August day the (A7)steam pipe pouring down
The (D)fireman with his long oil can (A7)oiling the old valve (D)gears
Waiting for the fast mail train to semaphore to (D)clear

The engineer in the old high cab, his (A7)gold watch in his (D)hand
Looking at the water glass and (A7)letting down the sand
(D)Rolling out on the old main line (A7)gtaking up the (D)slack
Gone today so they say but to(A7)morrow he'll be (D)back

   Oh, if I (A7)could (G)re(D)turn
To those (G)boyhood days of (A7)mine
And the (D)greenlight on the Southern
   Southern (A7)railroad (D)line

     (mandoline solo)

(D)Creeping down the rusty rails of the (A7)weed grown branch (D)line
The section houses gray and white by the (A7)yard limit sign
The (D)hoggers call the old high ball, (A7)no more time to (D)wait
Rolling down to Birmingham with a (A7)ten car load for (D)freight

The whistle scream with a hiss of steam, the (A7)headlight gleams (D)clear
The drivers roll on the green and go (A7)getting mighty near
(D)Handing up the orders to the (A7)engine crew on (D)time
It's the Alabama great southern AG(A7)S railroad (D)line

   Oh, if I (A7)could (G)re(D)turn
To those (G)boyhood days of (A7)mine
And the (D)greenlight on the Southern
   Southern (A7)railroad (D)line

   (repeat)
